Mark Wells, Chief Technology Officer at Esri UK, shares his journey from software engineering to becoming a leader in the field of geographic information systems (GIS). With a background in software development and a passion for maps, Mark has been instrumental in helping organisations leverage location intelligence to make informed decisions. In this interview, he discusses the evolution of GIS, the impact of emerging technologies like AI, and the importance of community engagement in the geospatial sector.
Could you tell us about your journey towards becoming the CTO at Esri UK and how your background has shaped your approach to location intelligence?
My journey started in 2005 when I joined Esri, a company that makes software for mapping and geospatial analysis. I didn't know much about it at the time, but there's just something about maps that caught my attention. They're tactile, visually compelling, and interactive. I wanted to enjoy what I did and create software that people would enjoy using and that helps solve real-world problems. As I progressed within the company, I took on various roles, from building demos and proofs of concept to engaging directly with clients. Each experience deepened my understanding of client needs and how they use our technology. I'm grateful for the opportunities I've had to work across almost every part of our organisation in a variety of roles, which has given me a great foundation to understand our customers, our business, and to take on the role of CTO.
How does Esri UK help organisations across various sectors make better decisions?
At Esri UK, our mission is to help more people understand the value of taking a geographic approach and to simplify access to our technology. Geography helps us understand the world around us, and by examining the spatial relationships between different things, we can start to understand how they relate to one another. This allows us to ask questions like, "What impact will building a new housing estate have on the environment and biodiversity?" or "How will heavy rainfall affect drainage in the area?" We can also look at demographics, shopping habits, school catchment areas, and the impact on traffic, electricity, and water networks. Employing geographic analysis and location intelligence allows for precise scenario modelling, exploration of various outcomes, and ultimately, more informed decision-making across all industries.
How are advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) impacting ArcGIS and the GIS industry as a whole?
AI is revolutionising the GIS industry in two key areas. First, GeoAI involves combining AI and ML with geography to answer questions more quickly and efficiently at scale. Within ArcGIS, we offer pre-trained ML tools for tasks like object detection and classification. For example, we can analyse satellite imagery to identify roof shapes and generate a dataset of polygons representing those roofs, enabling further analysis such as calculating the potential for solar panel installation based on various geospatial factors. Second, Generative AI allows us to integrate AI assistants into our workflows, making geographic approaches more accessible through natural language queries. This evolution creates a more intuitive interface to complex technologies, enabling users to get results easily, from determining bin collection days to answering complex geographic questions.
Could you share some use cases to illustrate the range of industries Esri UK assists?
Location and geography are universally applicable across all industries, from real-time decision-making in transport networks to planning and construction, biodiversity management, sustainability initiatives, energy and communications networks, forestry, and finance. For senior IT and data executives, adopting data-driven strategies is a priority. Geography and location serve as powerful unifiers for disparate datasets, acting as a primary key to integrate and analyse data. ArcGIS and geospatial technology provide a comprehensive system for maintaining authoritative data, analysing data and modelling scenarios, and visualising and sharing information. This framework supports innovation, collaboration, data-driven decision-making, and robust data governance, ensuring secure data access and management across the organisation.
How does Esri UK support customers in their journey towards achieving a return on investment?
We offer a variety of services to assist organisations through a phased approach: design, build, operate, and maintain. My advice is twofold. First, think about your whole organisation and the challenges you're trying to solve. It's not just about having the best tools but also about using them effectively to drive business benefits. Second, engage with the wider geospatial community to learn and improve through shared experiences. Don't go it alone – there are lots of organisations you can learn from, even outside your sector. For example, the principles of logistics, optimising operations and resources, and making data-driven decisions in real-time apply across a whole range of organisations and industries. Starting with ArcGIS Online, our software-as-a-service system, provides a practical and scalable approach that grows with organisations.
What trends do you see shaping the future of geospatial technology, and how is Esri UK adapting to these changes?
The accessibility of geospatial technology is increasingly exciting, thanks to software-as-a-service platforms and the potential of AI to further democratise access. Historically, the cost of technology, software, and the skills required for analysis were prohibitive for many. These barriers have fallen dramatically, and it's a massively different place today. At Esri UK, we're witnessing rapid growth driven by broader use within organisations and a growing recognition of the power of geography and location across all sectors. To meet this demand, we're focusing on expanding our team in the UK, collaborating with partners to leverage domain-specific expertise, and emphasising software-as-a-service and managed cloud services. These approaches allow organisations to scale efficiently, ensuring best practices and reducing the frequency of issues for our customers. Our goal is to provide high-quality services that prevent problems before they occur, leading to better outcomes for everyone involved.
What advice would you offer to aspiring professionals embarking on their careers in the geospatial sector?
This is a brilliant time to be considering a career in the geospatial field, with unparalleled accessibility to technology. My advice is to get stuck in, whatever stage you're at. Connect with people, build your network, come to events and get inspired by organisations making a real difference through geography. The geospatial community is really special – people recognise the value of these approaches and want to help each other learn, improve, and share. There are so many sectors to choose from where geography is relevant, and there's lots of interesting and important work to be done. So, go and get inspired, and create the world you want to see.
