What inspired you to take up the role of director of gaming, media and entertainment and sports at Globant?
My love for gaming started from a young age when I received my first Nintendo console as a gift one Christmas. From that moment, I knew I wanted a career in the gaming industry. After studying business and project management, I started working at a gaming studio in France in 2006. I later moved to Argentina to work with Gameloft. A few years after that, I met Globant. At the time it was still a fairly small company, but I joined to help build their end-to-end game development capabilities and gaming services.
Over the past decade I've held various roles related to gaming and interactive media, including helping Globant expand their operations in Europe. Most recently, in January 2023, I took on an expanded director position overseeing business development across gaming as well as media & entertainment and sports. There are increasing synergies between these industries as they borrow innovations from one another - for example sports broadcasts using techniques from video games to create more immersive experiences for fans. I'm thrilled to nurture further innovation across these connected worlds.
Can you give some examples of the types of challenges AAA game developers face that Globant helps solve? How do you differentiate from competitors?
AAA game development pushes the boundaries of technical complexity. For instance, rendering huge open worlds with vast scale, detail, and physics. Or developing advanced AI systems that make gameplay more dynamic and realistic. Globant specialises in solving complex engineering problems like these that bring next-gen games to life. We also excel in 3D art creation and optimisation so visuals meet the highest quality bar while performing smoothly. What sets Globant apart is our collaborative culture and genuine passion for gaming. We embed engineers directly into game studios so it feels like one unified team. And we only staff hardcore gaming enthusiasts who live and breathe games. This ensures the highest commitment to achieving new innovations that wow players. Our mindset and approach make us a true design partner in helping AAA studios tackle their most ambitious visions.
Can you give some examples of the challenges AAA developers currently face? And how does Globant differentiate in helping address those challenges?
The AAA gaming industry is facing a reckoning after overheated growth during the pandemic led to mass layoffs in 2022. With budgets ballooning into the billions, risks have compounded and studios are looking to develop games more efficiently. This ties into how Globant differentiates - rather than hiring specialised talent full-time, studios can tap into our global talent pools on an on-demand basis. So if they need help with a certain system or asset during development, we can deploy targeted teams from Europe, Asia, Latin America, etc. based on specific needs and time zones. This flexible access to specialised skills helps AAA studios scale up and down while controlling costs. And our global delivery footprint spanning more countries, expertise and schedules sets us apart from competitors. In summary, we provide versatile engineering and art capabilities that perfectly align to customers' needs during any phase of development.
You mentioned specialised engineering and tools development as key strengths. Can you expand more on those niche capabilities Globant provides? How do those empower gaming clients?
We have extensive expertise building proprietary solutions tailored to gaming clients' needs - whether game engines, analytics platforms, asset management systems, or other custom tools. These provide in-house development teams more leverage during the game creation process. For example, we've created predictive analytics engines allowing studios to simulate monetisation outcomes for different game design decisions. That's invaluable visibility enabling smarter product choices pre-launch.
Another key strength stemming from our enterprise IT background is strengthening gaming infrastructure beyond the games themselves - especially crucial data strategies to harness player insights. Suddenly gaining millions of players creates a flood of data most studios aren't equipped to capitalise on fully. We bring proven enterprise data governance to build more leverage from user analytics.
The overarching benefit we provide is empowering gaming partners to focus more strategic resources on core IP creation while we amplify capabilities through niche tools and infrastructure. Our specialised support allows gaming teams to punch above their weight class, achieving ambitions they couldn't solely on their own.
How do you ensure seamless integration with gaming clients' existing systems and processes for smooth outsourced development?
We're highly adaptable to each client's needs - whether having Globant team members on-site, offshore, or a mix with onsite travel at key milestones. Our global talent reach provides flexibility to be embedded closest to partners.
Additionally, with 15+ years servicing gaming, we've productised processes and tools to facilitate outsourcing relationships. Many studios operate in an ad hoc way, so adding external partners can be cumbersome. We provide structures - protocols, dashboards, defined cadences - scaffolding consistency with distributed teams based on proven AAA techniques. For less mature partners, this eases their outsourcing transition. While for sophisticated studios with outsourcing experience, we directly meld into their existing flows.
In essence, we pride ourselves on custom-fitting the engagement model to each gaming client's specific maturity level and integration needs for smooth, value-driving services delivery.
What strategies do you leverage to build strong, creative relationships with major gaming partners like Ubisoft and EA?
We foster partnerships in a few key ways:
First, by connecting in-person during pivotal milestones, even when mostly operating remotely day-to-day. Sharing physical creative spaces builds bonds critical for fluid collaboration. Second, Globant's culture intrinsically aligns with gaming values - creativity, imagination, and having fun. This cultural affinity eases working together as an integrated team.
Third, implementing robust processes and frameworks smooths effective collaboration at scale despite complexity. And lastly, we take a growth mindset by constructively challenging partners with suggestions based on accrued industry lessons. For instance, collaborating with EA for 15+ years, we can responsibly cross-pollinate best practices to mutual benefit.
In essence, by embedding as a true design partner versus just a vendor, with shared creative passion, operational excellence and mutual growth ethos, we gain gaming leaders' trust and respect as collaborators in innovation.
Beyond staff augmentation, what else does Globant provide to accelerate game development launches?
While our specialised engineering skills inherently speed projects, we also employ AI to further streamline workflows. Importantly, we don't use AI to build full games - rather to simplify routine tasks for engineers and testers.
For instance, our proprietary Ogwar tool auto-generates code documentation when onboarding new mid-project team members, saving immense ramp up time. And our Magnify automated visual testing suite detects graphical defects in builds, freeing QA staff to tackle more nuanced issues.
So in tandem with expert resourcing, we optimise processes through AI assisting with rote responsibilities. This force multiplier effect goes far beyond what additional headcount alone provides in accelerating polished launches. Our fused specialised talent and workflow automation make for an extremely powerful proposition to ship quality games faster.
AI seems increasingly crucial across industries, gaming included. How is Globant pushing boundaries when it comes to applying AI innovations in the gaming sector?
AI has become central at major gaming conferences - 80-90% of sessions at last year's Game Developers Conference were AI-focused. We've felt right at home having built proprietary gaming AI tools already years ago. We recognised this emerging need early and have become leaders in applying AI to streamline workflows.
For example, our homegrown solutions auto-generate code documentation for faster ramp up and automate graphical defect testing to free up QA staff. These innovations optimise and accelerate studios' processes.
We're showcasing more gaming AI advancements at this year's GDC while also sharing them across the industry to help studios work smarter. As AI permeates virtually all sectors, including gaming, we pride ourselves on pushing boundaries - both developing new innovations for clients and advancing state-of-the-art solutions to transform the entire field.
What emerging gaming trends like metaverse and immersive tech excite you most? How is Globant preparing to embrace these innovations?
More than metaverse hype, I'm excited by broader "immersive worlds" platforms like Roblox and Fortnite where we're already helping develop next-gen experiences. As brands want to connect with audiences in these spaces, we're skilling up to meet that demand.
There are also strong synergies between gaming and immersive tech like VR/AR. Many VR pioneers emerged from gaming, and even enterprise AR leverages gaming engines under the hood. We're thrilled by this continuity from our gaming foundations into new interaction paradigms.
We prepare by training talent in these ecosystems while also connecting our robust gaming IP and toolsets to adjacent spaces as immersive matures. For instance, Apple's high-end VR headset will present new opportunities to translate our gaming capabilities to fresh devices and user experiences.
Ultimately, major innovation happens when gaming converges with pioneering platforms redefining engagement. We fully embrace this by bridging our gaming DNA across these new technology frontiers.
What advice would you give gaming executives to avoid pitfalls when selecting an external partner?
I'd highlight three key points: First, clearly define project scope upfront for both your team and the vendor's - ensuring alignment on responsibilities to prevent duplication or conflicts. Second, actively facilitate a collaborative, integrated culture across internal and external staff. Make connections, ensure teams support each other in blending work streams smoothly. And third, strategically view partners for their force multiplying abilities versus just extra capacity. While learning curves exist in partnerships, seasoned vendors like Globant have proven integration models to ensure seamlessness. Industry growth dictates more need for flexibility that partners can unlock. In summary - clarity in scope, nurturing a unified team culture across staff, and leveraging partners strategically to expand capabilities. Do those things right and you’ll see partnerships catalyse innovation dramatically.
