Orchestration including Docker and Kubernetes implementations are proving very popular right now. The containerisation of applications is particularly needed when creating distributed applications.

What is the current perception of cloud services?

It was not that long ago many organisations hesitated to adopt cloud services. But now, it would be hard to find any business that doesn’t use cloud services! When looking at the adoption of cloud services, orchestration including Docker and Kubernetes implementations are proving very popular right now. The containerisation of applications is particularly needed when creating distributed applications.

Whilst most cloud implementation is on public services like AWS, there are a number of businesses who choose to use private cloud services for the additional layer of security. Some businesses are also subject to industry regulations that require them to use private cloud services. It is also possible to save money by using a private cloud as you do not have to pay each time you access a public cloud infrastructure.

It’s important to remember that whilst cloud services offer a great deal of convenience, they also come with their drawbacks too. Security is one, particularly when using public cloud services as your exposure to risk increases. You also never really have a clear visibility of the cost involved with using cloud services, making it difficult to budget.

How can organisations create a successful cloud strategy?

When defining the cloud strategy for your organisation, there are several important factors to consider. The first, and most important, is to consider what level of security and privacy your customers and products need. If a high amount of security is required, then a private cloud solution may be required. Once your security requirements are established, think about the scalability of your solution. Can it handle an increased number of customers or products without generating significant cost? Finally, think about how your proposed solution can integrate with other service and what APIs or SDKs may be required to achieve your desired outcome. If your cloud solution doesn’t have a dedicated SDK, then you may need to find custom solutions - particularly if you need to work with legacy systems.

We are increasingly seeing basic processing being completed on private clouds, but then fed into a public cloud for the end-user to access.

How will cloud services evolve in the coming years?

Cloud services with stable and powerful orchestration engines that can deliver microservices will prove to be the most popular in the coming years. We are already seeing the conversion of legacy systems and existing monolithic applications to micro services. Hybrid solutions that combine both private and public services will also prove very popular over the coming years as users look for the most efficient solutions in terms of both security and financially. We are increasingly seeing basic processing being completed on private clouds, but then fed into a public cloud for the end-user to access. Alongside cost and security, other key areas that cloud providers will need to show excellence in are innovation, stability and the scalability of their offerings.
