How important is it to create a positive employee experience?
Employee experience is all about looking after the people who make up your business. It is no secret of course that people are the biggest asset in any business. Which is why employee experience should not just be a priority for HR teams, it should be a priority for anybody involved in running the business. There is a lot of talk about businesses going through transformational journeys at the minute in an effort to improve employee experience. This can make creating a positive employee experience feel daunting and perhaps even achievable for smaller businesses. But in reality, employee experience starts with small, every-day improvements. Investments, no matter how big or small, in recruitment, management or reward can all help to improve the employee experience. When making an investment in HR or introducing new procedures, always consider the impact it will have on your employee experience.
Employee experience should not just be a priority for HR teams, it should be a priority for anybody involved in running the business.
Business leaders should take a step back and think about the four C’s that create positive employee engagement - Connect, Coach, Collaborate and Create.
What can business leaders do to get the most out of their employees even during times of uncertainty?
Over the past few years, business leaders have faced an enormous amount of uncertainty in the form of the global pandemic. Even as we move away from the pandemic, new uncertainties have emerged such as the current macroeconomic climate. With so much uncertainty, it can be hard for business leaders to successfully manage their employees and get the best out of them. In moments of doubt, business leaders should take a step back and think about the four C’s that create positive employee engagement - Connect, Coach, Collaborate and Create. If a business leader can successfully do these four things with their employees, then they create a safe and positive workplace that empowers employees to perform at their best.
Creating a safe workplace should be a key consideration for business leaders. If employees are comfortable to be their true selves and know that they can voice their opinions without fear of reprimand, then they will be far more loyal to the business, which ultimately helps improve employee retention. Another key element of creating a safe workplace is accepting failure, and perhaps even celebrating it! If a business leader is able to see failures as learning opportunities and lead by example with this, it will create an increased sense of confidence in their employees.
Should businesses create ‘moments that matter’ for their employees?
Creating ‘moments that matter’ is one of the most important things a business can do when looking to improve employee experience. For me, there are two main ways that businesses can achieve this. The first is by upskilling their leaders and managers. Leaders and managers interact with employees every day and therefore have the biggest impact on their employee experience - be it positive or negative. Upskilling leaders and managers to have that personal touch with employees is the first step in improving employee experience. Very simply, if an employee likes working for their manager then that’s a positive employee experience!
The second way to create moments that matter is by embracing technology. Technology not only helps to create moments that matter, but also helps you to create them consistently. Having consistent moments that matter across employees is far more sustainable than one-off events which may leave some employees feeling isolated and therefore having a negative employee experience.
